What Is There Such A Hype About Breast Cancer?…?

I have noticed that there is a lot of awareness about breast cancer and charitable/researchable contribution
BUT is not the most lethal, nor the most common cancer
there are other cancers that people should be aware of/research should be done about-like pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer…
I am curious to know why such a hype about breast cancer.
It is the second leading cause of death for women, and over the years it has not been as fatal
My grandma had breast cancer ..so is not like it has not hit home for me but I also had an aunt die of ovarian cancer
So why such hype?..http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/…
Easy one.
Right now it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month so breast cancer is very high profile
But the reason breast cancer has a consistently higher profile than other cancers is simple – sheer hard work.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns and Breast Cancer Awareness Month were started by ordinary women, most of them with breast cancer or who had lost family members to breast cancer, to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. Enthusiastic participation and hard work by women made it grow into something nationally, then internationally, recognised (and then big business cashed in).
People who campaign around illnesses are usually concerned with the illness that’s affected them or their family. I know a couple who have a child with a very rare and life-threatening condition (not a cancer). Much of their time is now taken up with campaigning around this condition – fundraising and agitating for more funding for research, more education, more awareness etc.
Individuals don’t have unlimited time, and choose their campaigns. And that’s what the women who started the breast cancer awareness campaign did, and worked their socks off.
There are other cancer awareness months, ribbons etc; here’s a list but no cancer campaign has had the sheer hard work put into it that breast cancer awareness has. Any group of people can start an awareness campaign for any illness – but if they want it to be as successful as the breast cancer campaigning, they’ll have to be prepared to be as dedicated and work as hard.
And yes it is thanks to the hard work of those women that breast cancer is no longer the automaticdeath sentence it used to be – but don’t lose sight of the fact that in the US an aversge os 112 women die from breast cancer every day. That’s one every 15 minutes
Research is conducted on all types of cancer. As far as awareness goes there isn’t much to be aware of with pancreatic or ovarian cancer as there are no screening exams and by the time symptoms occur it is often too late.
The hype over breast cancer started because everyday women who either got the disease or lost someone to it organized and dedicated a lot of hard work to make it where it is today. With much thanks to them breast cancer is no longer the death sentence it once was, insurance companies do not argue over routine mammograms, unnecessary mastectomies are avoided, etc.
My grandparents died of prostate and lymph node Cancer and my father just died of Liver Cancer in June so Cancer is a very sore subject for me. I think the reason why breast cancer is being so “hyped” is because it’s not something that women get checked out every day. Most women don’t get mammograms and hardly ever get their breasts checked at their yearly GYN appointment (and most gyn’s don’t offer as it will take up more time from your appointment). This type of cancer doesn’t present itself until you get a lump on your breast and by then it may be too late.
Breast cancer is the second most common among women after skin cancer. It is only ‘not as lethal’ precisely because of the ‘hype.’
People know all about lung cancer. Pacreatic and ovarian cancers are relatively rare. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/commo…
Anyway, it’s breast cancer awareness month, which is why you’ve heard so much about it lately.
Any question on a cancer forum that begins “why is there such hype” is nothing but a troll.
See ya.
BTW, what is there such hype doesn’t make sense grammatically.
Ok, on the off chance that you really are curious …
The #1 type of cancer that kills women is lung cancer. Lung cancer is preventable in about 85% of cases. Just don’t smoke. Then you don’t get lung cancer.
Breast cancer is not preventable because the causes are completely unknown. This is why you do research. To find out what causes it, since no one knows. If you can find that out, then you can recommend how to prevent it. And lots of people will not die needlessly … as they do with lung cancer.
I suspect, if you had your own breast amputated because of cancer, you’d want to see a dam sight more research done.
