Hello, my father-in-law is 47 years old and dying of pancreatic cancer. He was told there was nothing more they could do for him and sent home to die about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday his hospice nurse told my mother-in-law that his liver is now shutting down (failing). I was wondering how long will this take and if and when the other organs will follow suit? If anyone has prior experience, maybe how much longer does he have to suffer like this? They live 1500 miles away and when he passes we will have to pack-up and leave to be there. I know this is all up to God, but I would like a small idea of what to expect next and what will occur over the next few hours or days. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all and God bless!!!

While it’s possible to have two different tumors at once, it sounds likely as if a tumor in the pancreas spread to the liver, a common place for pancreatic cancer to go.
If this is correct, then unfortunately it is not currently considered curable and can be aggressive. Often these tumors can cause pain, nausea, poor appetite and sometimes jaundice (yellowish skin tone). Chemotherapy and radiation can sometimes help but still many die soon after diagnosis if it has spread to the liver (metastatic, or stage IV).
Patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer live a median of 2-3 months – that means 50% will live more than time, though. Hospice can be very helpful, as can the medical oncologist. The most important thing for your uncle is symptom relief, quality of life and the support and love of his family. I wish you and your uncle the best.

My aunt was diagnosed in January, I knew in early december, she looked like she was pregnant and she was having all the symtoms starting in november she has lost 23 lbs in a month, she cant eat much, and has bad intestonal symtoms. She has started chemo and is in a clinical trial but I feel that this will only take away from her QUALITY of LIFE. She has hope, and is very strong. My question given all the information I have supplied HOW LONG DOES SHE HAVE?

Truth is no one really has that answer.
I hate it when doctors say things like, “You have three months to live” etc. They are clueless as to when someone will actually die and it is false of them to plant such seeds. I know people who were told they wouldn’t make it through the night and are hear to tell about it ten years later and others who were told, “you will be fine” and died a week later…so, just take it a moment at a time and be in the now of what is. That is all any of us have, really.
